• Case study: Kemp's ridley sea turtle Flashcards
why was there a decline?
• Smallest of the sea turtles
• Population decline
Turtles have great migration but focus on very specific nesting sites - limited by humans as beaches are sought out by both humans and sea turtles
why were we successful in conservation
• Success in conservation can be attributed to our understanding of their loss
○ We studied bycatch, observed eggs + loss ○ Community support for protection, general awareness of the issue
what else impacted them? how did we fix this?
○ Also impacted by natural weather events, accidental capture of sea turtles by fishing vessels, and the consumption of turtle eggs by humans
○ Escape valve implemented in shrimp catching nets so sea turtles could escape
how were the falcon and turtle species population numbers and distribution aided?
Active reintroduction efforts into protected areas
introduction of species into different areas - increase populations and allows the species to have many populations rather than putting the pressure on a few bigger populations
