Ecology - Unit 1 (Community Interactions) Flashcards
Predator-prey
when a predator hunts, kills, and eats the prey
Competition
the interaction of individuals of species that seek a common resource that is limited in supply.
Mutualism
When organisms do things that benefit each other.
Ex. The plover bird eats the insects from the teeth of the crocodile.
Parasitism
When one organism (the parasite) lives in/on another organism (the host) and benefits
Ex. Tapeworms feed off of the nutrients in human intestines
Commensalism
When one organism benefits, and the other is NOT helped or harmed
Ex. The remora fish feeds off the food scraps from the shark
Keystone species
A specie which other species in an ecosystem largely depend, if it were removed the ecosystem would change drastically
