2.5 (Soil Properties) Flashcards
How will soil color differ?
Sand color will differ depending on moisture content.
What can soil color indicate?
Whether the soil has been saturated with water or not.
Clay particles hold nutrients until…
- they are absorbed by a plant root
- eaten by a soil microbe
- absorbed into the soil
Silt Size
- Range from 0.002mm to 0.06mm.
Sand Size
- Range from 0.06mm to 2mm.
Porosity
refers to spaces in the soil that can hold either air or water
Permeability
the rate at which water can travel through soil
Clay Size
Less than 0.002mm
Clay and Silt Porosity (spaces in soil that can hold either war or air)
Mostly small pores
Sand Porosity (spaces in soil that can hold either war or air)
Mostly large pores
Clay Permeabilty (the rate at which water can travel through soil)
Slow
Silt Permeabilty (the rate at which water can travel through soil)
Slow - Moderate
Sand Permeabilty (the rate at which water can travel through soil)
rapid
Clay Water-holding capacity
Large
