4.11 Cause/Effect Of Climate Change Flashcards
Sea Ice (Ice “sheets”)
Layers of snow that accumulate (gather) on the surface of waters which do NOT contribute to sea level rise nor melt.
Glacial Ice
Ice found at the tops of mountains which DOES contributes to sea level rise when it melts.
Thermal Expansion
The increase in the volume of matter when temperature increases, caused by the vibration of molecules. More space in between each molecules happen.
Saltwater Intrusion
The invasion of saltwater into freshwater reservoirs, causing harm to trees and biodiversity and leading to freshwater loss.
What’s the problem associated with warmer temperatures and sea level rise?
- Saltwater intrusion
- inability of trees and biodiversity to withstand floods of saltwater
- freshwater loss in reservoirs and aquifers.
At just a 2 degree Celsius increase in global temperature, what is predicted in terms of sea level rise?
Roughly 1 foot of flooding is predicted, resulting in flooding of areas such as Jamaica Bay, La Guardia, and Staten Island.
At a 4 degree Celsius increase in global temperature, what is expected in terms of sea level rise?
6 feet of flooding would be expected.
What are the potential EFFECTS of a 2 degree Celsius increase in global temperature in terms of sea level rise?
- Saltwater intrusion
- freshwater loss in reservoirs and aquifers
What are the potential effects of warmer temperatures in terms of climate change?
- droughts leading to wildfires
- heavy rain and snow
- extreme weather
- increased evaporation rates
What are the change effects of climate change?
- Changes in sea level
- changes in precipitation patterns (extreme weather)
- changes in biodiversity
- changes in human health
What is the difference between sea ice and glacial ice?
- Sea ice is layers of snow that accumulate and typically do NOT melt on the surface of waters, does not contribute to sea level rise.
- Glacial ice is found at the tops of mountains and DOES melt which contributes to sea level rise.
What are the Anthropogenic causes of Global Warming?
- Changes in greenhouse gas concentration
- Changes in forests
- Changes in agriculture
- Changes in sea ice extent
- Changes in ocean temperatures
What do warmer temperatures cause?
- Droughts that can lead to wildfires
- Heavy rain and snow
