Ecology and the Environment: The Organism and the Environment Flashcards
What does population mean
A group of the same species interbreeding in a certain area
What does community mean
An interacting group of various species in a location
What does habitat mean
A place where an organism lives
What does ecosystem mean
The non-living components, the living components, habitats and communities make up the ecosystem for a specific area
What is biodiversity
The entire variety of life that is on Earth
What does biotic mean
Living factors
What does abiotic mean
Non-living factors
What abiotic factors affect the size of a population and distribution of organisms
Temperature, soil pH, soil moisture
What abiotic factors affect the size of a population and distribution of organisms
The amount of food available for a species and the number of organisms that eat that food
How do you investigate the population size using quadrats
Place the quadrat randomly within a sampling point and count the number of organisms inside the quadrat. and repeat this process multiple times
What is the equation to find the estimated population size with your quadrat results
Population size=(Total size/sampled area) x Number of organisms found
