Ecology Flashcards
Biotic
Living things
Abiotic
non living things
Population
Group of organisms of the sam species living in a particular area
Community
Many organisms of different species living in a particular area.
Ecosystem
Self sustaining collection of Organisms and their physical enviroment
Biome
Self sustaining collection of organisms and their physical environment, Both biotic and abiotic.
Biosphere
all biomes and areas were living things are found.
Limiting factors
Things that a species need to grow but are limited.
Food pyramid
Bottom- Producer, Autotrophs (make own food)
second level- Primary consumer, heterotrophs (eat energy) eat plants
Middle level- Secondary consumer, heterotrophs, eat primary consumers, carnivore
Top Level- Tertiary consumer, eat primary/secondary consumers, carnivores,
Trophic levels
go up by 10 percent in energy flow
Biodiversity
The amount of different organisms in an area
Primary seccession
brand new land, nothing ever grew there before,
Pioneer stages
First to show up
Secondary Seccession
Changes that happen in an area that already had life, but abiotic factors change.
Climax community
Stable community
Pioneer species-Intermediate species- climax community
levels of communitys
Pioneer stages
Bare rock, Lichens, small annual plants, lichens, perennial herb, grasses
Intermediate stages
Grasses, shrubs, shade trees
Climax community
Shade trees
Commensalism
when one organism benefits from another but the other does not benefit.
Mutualism
both organisms benefit from the relationship
Parasitism
One organism benefits from another and the other suffers.
Predation
One animal benefits and the other suffers.
Competition
Neither organism benefits from the relationship
