Cell Transport Flashcards
Diffusion
Materials move from an area of higher concentration (crowded) to lower concentration (less crowded)
Goal of Diffusion
Equalibrium
Osmosis
Diffusion of water: High concentration of water to low concentration of water
Hyper
“above” more water inside cell so it shrinks: Hyper-tonic water moves outside the cell
Hypo
“below” less water in cell so it swells: Hypo-tonic more water moves inside the cell.
Iso
“equal” same amount of water as cell so it stays the same: Iso-tonic water going in and out of a cell.
Selective Transport
Uses channel proteins to move larger molecules across the membrane sometimes uses energy
Diffusion- no energy, through membrane
Homeostasis
Variables within an organism are regulated so that internal conditions remain stable and relatively constant.
