ecology 2 Flashcards
Movement of matter versus energy
movement of matter is cyclic and movement of energy is linear in ecosystems
Biomass
entirety of all biologically produced organic matter
What are some forms of energy conversion?
Cellular respiration and light energy into chemical energy in photosynthesis
Food chain
outlines who eats whom through a path of energy (contains levels: producers, primary, secondary, etc.)
Food web
contains the whole system of connected food chains (arrows connecting all around)
Why is the number of trophic levels limited?
10% rule. As the trophic levels move up, less of the original solar energy is stored at each level.
3 reasons why energy decreases through trophic levels
The rest of the 90% of energy is 1. released into biosphere as heat 2. some biomass is not eaten (bones) 3. biomass is egested
Unit of energy used for energy pyramids
kJ m^-2 y^-1
What is FCR?
Food conversion ratio which measures animal’s efficiency in converting feed mass into desired input
Primary succession
when plants and animals first colonize a lifeless area, no soil at beginning
Secondary succession
happens when a community is impacted by a disturbance, soil is present at the beginning
