cell respiration 2 Flashcards
Plant color determination
The color of plants is determined by the color of light that it reflects. Chloroplasts absorb red and blue light most effectively and reflect green light more than other colors.
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the reaction of CO2 and water using energy from light. Photosynthesis produces carbohydrates and releases oxygen as a waste product. Photosynthesis takes place in chloroplasts.
Photolysis
Photolysis is the stage of photosynthesis in which water is split by light. The energy of photons is used to split water molecules. Photolysis takes 2 water molecules and photons and converts it into 4 electrons, 4 hydrogen molecules, and oxygen.
What kind of reaction is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is an example of an anabolic reaction. This is because small molecules, CO2 and water, are joined together to form large molecules, sugars.
Limiting factor
A limiting factor is a factor that restricts the rate of a reaction. 3 limiting factors that can limit the rate of photosynthesis are light, CO2, and temperature.
Cyanobacteria
Cyanobacteria, through the process of photosynthesis, can be attributed to increasing the oxygen concentration on Earth throughout its existence.
Chromatography
Chromatography is a technique used to separate substances based on their different movements on a paper by capillary action. The pigments are commonly separated using an alcohol solvent mixture.
Chemiosmosis
Chemiosmosis involves the pumping of protons into the intermembrane space of thylakoids by using energy from electron transport chain. This is followed by proton diffusion into the stroma to ultimately produce ATP.
Chloroplast
The chloroplast is a double-membraned structure with thylakoids arranged in stacks. It contains its own circular DNA and contains 70S ribosomes.
Thylakoids + stroma
Thylakoids are found within chloroplasts. Thylakoids enclose a small space within the intermembrane which allows for ATP synthase to be generated. The thylakoid spaces are small in volume to allow the proton concentration to remain as high as possible. The thylakoids are embedded in the stroma. The stroma is where the Calvin cycle takes place.
