Community

A

All or some of the organisms in a common environment (may study competition, succession, conservation)

Q

Ecosystem

A

Consists of all the organisms in an area and the physical environment with which they interact
(includes plants, animals, soil, water and nutrient cycles)

A

Changes in the composition of a community from the initial development of vegetation to the
establishment of a climax community

Q

Primary succession

A

Happens on bare rocks and lava
Pioneer species like lichens and mosses (don’t need soil to grow)
* No competition
* Eventually soil starts to form, allowing other plants to grow

Q

secondary succession

A

-Species become established from existing seeds; some may resprout from roots or stems * Disturbances such as fire, logging, abandoned farmland…
-Fire is a common disturbance; 2 major strategies: – Resprouting from underground plant parts like roots, rhizomes, meristems (many chaparral species, aspen, grasses)
– Seeds buried in soil (e.g., lodgepole pine)
