Ecology Flashcards
- the study of the habitation of organisms
- the study of plants and animals in relation to their environment
Ecology
from greek work
Oikos - habitation or house or place to live/home
- a living thing that has an organized structure, can react to stimuli, reproduce, grow, adapt, and maintain homeostasis
Organism/Species
- a group of organisms of the same species and live in the same area
Population
- a group of different populations that live together in a defined area
Community
- a collection of all organisms that live in a particular place together with their non-living environment
Ecosystem
- Physical, non-living factors that influence an ecosystem
- Abiotic Component:
- living factors that influence an ecosystem
- Biotic Component
organisms that make their own food.
- Producers
animals that feed on plants or other animals
- Consumers
fungi and bacteria that feed on the wastes or remains of animals and plants
- Decomposers
use light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and carbohydrates
Photosynthesis
performed by bacteria, use chemical energy to produce carbohydrates
Chemosynthesis
obtain energy by eating only plants
Herbivores
eat only animals
Carnivores
eat both plants and animals
Omnivores
- movement of energy and nutrient from one feeding group of organisms to another
Food Chain
- interlocking pattern formed of a series of interconnecting food chains
Food Web
- A diagram that shows the amount of energy or matter contained within each trophic level in a food chain/web
Energy Pyramid
- represents the amount of living organic matter at each trophic level
Biomass Pyramid
- a series of predictable changes in an environment
Ecological Succession
succession that occurs on the surface where no soil exists
Primary Succession
first species to populate the area
Pioneer Species
following a disturbance that destroys a community without destroying the soil.
Secondary Succession
