EBR chemistry Flashcards
is the curve in the upper surface of a liquid close to the surface of the container or another object, produced by surface tension
meniscus
the process of separation of liquid from solid and other immiscible (non-mixing) liquids, by removing the liquid layer at the top from the layer of solid or liquid below.
Decantation
occurs in the chemical process of precipitation, and it is typically a clear liquid free of precipitate located above the solid part during settling.
supernatant liquid
a solid formed by a change in a solution, often due to a chemical reaction or change in temperature that decreases solubility of a solid.
Precipitate
the process in which solid particles in a liquid or gaseous fluid are removed by the use of a filter medium that permits the fluid to pass through but retains the solid particles
filtration
a semi-permeable paper barrier placed perpendicular to a liquid or air flow. It is used to separate fine solid particles from liquids or gases.
Filter paper
is defined as a heterogeneous mixture in which the solid particles are spread throughout the liquid without dissolving in it.
suspension
is whatever remains or acts as a contaminant after a given class of events.
the insoluble solid left on the filter
residue
the liquid which passed through the filter is called
filtrate.
are used to determine the acidity or alkalinity of a substance.
Litmus paper
process by which an element or compound transitions from its liquid state to its gaseous state below the temperature at which it boils;
evaporation
is the change of state from a gas to a liquid
Condensation
the process of separating the components of a liquid mixture through selective evaporation and condensation.
Distillation
the formation of a solid in a solution during a chemical reaction.
