Anorexia Nervosa:
A life-threating eating disorder characterized by refusal to maintain body weight appropriate for age, intense fear of gaining weight appropriate for age, intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, a severely distorted body image, and refusal to acknowledge the seriousness of weight loss. Categorized as restricting or binge/purge type.
Interoceptive Awareness:
Sensory response to emotional and visceral cues, such as hunger. Ignored in anorexia nervosa.
Consequences of nutritional compromise in anorexia nervosa:
- Cardiac arrhythmias
- loss of bone density
- neuronal deficits
- hormonal changes: amenorrhea, decreased libido
- Purging: electrolyte disturbances
Maturity Fears:
psychological etiology of anorexia; feeling overwhelmed by adult responsibilities. Starvation as response to these fears
Enmeshment:
social theory for development of anorexia; extreme form of intensity in family interaction with lack of boundaries
Overprotectiveness:
social theory for development of anorexia; acting on high degree of concern may hinder autonomy and competence
Bulimia Nervosa:
An eating disorder in which there is few outward signs and the patient is of normal weight. Individual engages in recurrent episodes of binge eating and compensatory behaviour to avoid weight gain through purging methods such as self-induced vomiting, misusing laxatives, diuretics, enemas, or emetics or through non-purging methods such as fasting or excessive exercise.
Hedonic Hunger:
drive to eat to obtain pleasure in the absence of an energy deficit
Binge Eating Disorder:
Characterized by frequent consumption of a large amount of food in a short period of time, coupled with feelings of being out of control and distressed, eating until uncomfortably full, and being ashamed or depressed following episode. Purging/compensatory behaviours are lacking and overweight is possible.
Pharmacologic Intervention for BED
Vyvanse – stimulant
