EARS Flashcards
designed for hearing and equilibrium. It receives sound vibrations, is sensitive to the force of gravity, and reacts to the movement of the head.
EAR
projection that collects and channel sounds.
PINNA
Ear is divided into three major areas:
External ear - direct sound waves
Middle ear - direct sound waves
Inner ear - balance and hearing
EXTERNAL EAR IS COMPOSED OF
auricle (pinna) and the external acoustic meatus.
- opens the ear drum
Ear canal or auditory canal
- vibrates when the sound hits it
Ear drum or tympanic membrane
- line the auditory canal and secrete a cerumen or earwax.
Glands
- lubricates and protects the ear.
Ear wax
Contains structures referred to as labyrinths, because they are complicated, bony shapes.
INNER EAR
is receptors for hearing
Cochlea
is divided into 3 channels that run it’s entire coiled length.
These channels are filled with auditory fluids.
Cochlea
There are holes in the cochlea, round and oval windows,
allowing sounds to enter it from the middle ear.
are bony structures lined with membranes
The vestibules and semicircular canals
Inside one of the cochlea chambers is the
organ of Corti.
is filled with nerve endings that connect to the auditory nerve transmitting sounds from the inner ear to the brain.
