lateralization
specialization of each hemisphere works the body. Like the left hemisphere controls the right and vice versa. (eye, ear, hands)
impulse control
The ability to postpone or deny the immediate response to an idea or behavior.
perseveration
To stay stuck, or persevere, in one thought or action for a longtime.
Primary prevention
preventing diseases by getting flu shots or setting up a kids car seats to prevent.
Secondary prevention
in an instance you start suspecting you’re sick, you go to the doctor’s and try to reduce the impact by taking pills
tertiary prevention
occurs after injury and we try to limit damage
child maltreatment
refers to all intentional harm to, or avoidable endangerment of, anyone under 18 years of age. that includes child abuse and child neglect
child abuse
child maltreatment includes both child abuse, which is deliberate action that harms a child’s physical, emotional, or sexual well-being
child neglect
which is failure to meet essential needs, such as for food, medical care, or education.
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
if a child is fearful, easily startled by noise, defensive and quick to attack, and confused between fantasy and reality, that suggests post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
permanency planning
An effort by child-welfare authorities to find a long-term living situation that will provide stability and support for a maltreated child. A goal is to avoid repeated changes of caregiver or school, which is particularly harmful.
Foster care
A legal, publicly supported system in which a maltreated child is removed from the parents’ custody and entrusted to another adult or family, who is reimbursed for expenses incurred in meeting the child’s needs.
kinship care
A form of foster care in which a relative of a maltreated child, usually a grandparent, becomes the approved caregiver.
