Ear, Orbit, Oral, and Nasal Cavities Flashcards
What 3 nerves supply sensation to the outer ear?
Greater auricular nerve
Auriculotemporal nerve
Lesser occipital nerve
What structures make up the outer ear?
External acoustic (auditory) meatus- from the auricle to the tympanic membrane
What 6 structures are found in the middle ear?
Tympanic membrane Tympanic cavity- round window and oval window Auditory Ossicles Stapedius Muscle Tensor Tympani Muscle CN IX- Tympanic Nerve
What 3 structures compose the Auditory Ossicles? Describe what they attach to.
Malleus- attaches to the tympanic membrane
Incus
Stapes- attached to the oval window
What does the stapedius muscle attach to? What is it responsible for?
The neck of the stapes
contracts reflexively in response to loud noises
What nerve innervates the stapedius muscle?
CN VII
What does the tensor tympani inert onto? What is it responsible for?
Inserts onto the malleus
Contracts reflexively to loud sounds
What nerve innervates the tensor tympani?
CN V-3 Mandibular Nerve
this means trigeminal nerve as is denoted by CN V, the 3 means the third branch which is the mandibular nerve
What 3 structures make up the inner ear?
Cochlea
Vestibule
Semicircular canals
What 2 structures compose the Vestibule?
Utricle
Saccule
What does the semicircular canals open into? And what does it sense?
The utricle
Used to sense rotational acceleration
What is the function of the utricle and saccule?
Senses linear acceleration and the pull of gravity
Which nerve supplies innervation to the inner ear?
Vestibulochoclear (auditory) nerve CN VIII
What are the 2 external features of the eye?
Conjuctiva
Eyelids- Tarsal plates and Tarsal glands
What is the lacrimal apparatus and what components does it contain?
It is the system containing orbital structures for tear production and drainage
Lacrima papilla and puncta
Lacrimal conaliculi and sac
Nasolacrimal duct
