if there is associated hearing loss

unilateral OME in a chinese person
What is seen on exam of OME?
fluid level or bubbles behind the drum
What should be excluded with chronic OME?
cholesteatoma
Why can chronic otitis media become cholesteatoma?
if secretions cannot drain, differentiation into squamous epithelium occurs
What is another name for cholesteatoma?
active swuaous chonric otitis media
What is the peak age of cholesteatoma?
5-15years
What are the symptoms of cholesteatoma?
foul discharge +/- deafness; headache; pain; facial paralysis; vertigo
What is the treatment for cholesteatoma?
mastoid surgery
