a series of cartilages joined in connective tissue
What is the difference between the cricoid cartilage and 1st tracheal ring?
cricoid cartilage is a full ring whereas as the tracheal rings are C-shaped
What muscle bridges the C in the tracheal rings?

What is the name of the membran that hangs betweenthe hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage
thyrohyoid membrane
What part of thr thyroid cartilage articulatese with the cricoid cartilage at the cricothyroid joint?
inferior horn

anterior; lateral and superior
What is the lateral process of the arytenoid also known as?
muscular process
What is the anteior process of the arytenoid known as?
vocal process
What do the arytenoid cartilages articulate with?
cricoid cartilage
where is the cricoarytenoid joint located?
superior to the cricothyroid joint
What does the laryngeal aditus open into?
laryngeal vestibule
What are the false vocal cords?
fold of the mucosa of the laryngeal vestibule– vestibular fold
What is found immediately inferior to the vestibular folds?
laryngeal ventricle
What is connected to the layrngeal ventricle?
a saccule that is pouched into the laryngeal vestibule
What is the pupose of the ventricle saccule?
contains lots of mucous to secrete and moisten the vocal cords
What is foudn below the true vocal cords?
infra-glottic cavity
What is the glottis?
true vocal cords and the space in between them
What are the vocal cords?
free borders of mucosa covered connective tissue in the larynx
What are the joins of the true vocal cords?
vocal ligament which connects between the arytenoid cartilage to thryoid cartilage
What are the flase vocal cords joined between?
arytenoid cartilage to epiglottis
What joins between the vocal ligamnet adn the cricoid cartilage?
conus elasticus
What joins the vestibular ligament and epiglottis?
quadrangular membrane
What is the vestibular ligament?
forms the vestibular fold when covered in mucosa
What is the rima glottidis?
space between the true vocal cords
What is the aryepiglottic fold?
superior border of the quadrangular membrane
What does tension do to sound?
increase pitch
what does relaxation of vocal cords do to sound?
decrease pitch
what does adduction of the vocal cords do to sound?
quieter
what does abduction of the vocal cords do to the sound?
louder
What nerve innervates the intrinsic muscles of the larynx?
vagus
What are the tensor muscles of the larynx?
cricothyroid muscles
What is the action of the cricothyroid muscles?
“nods” the thyroid cartilage
What are the attachments for the cricothyroid muscles?
from anterolateral cricoid cartilage to inferior horn of thyroid cartilage
What are the relaxor muscles of the larynx?
thyroarytenoid muscles
What are the attchments of the thyroarytenoid muscles?
posteiror thyroid to anterior arytenoid cartilage
What direction do the fibres of the thyroarytenoid muscles move?
superiro and parallel to the vocal cords- transverse
What are the adductor muscles of the larynx?
lateral crico-arytenoid muscles and arytenoid muscles
What are the attachments for the lateral crico-arytenoid muscles?
muscular (lateral) process of arytenoid to anterior cricoid cartilage
What is the space between the epiglottis and tongue?
vallecula
How do the lateral crico-arytenoid muscles work?
rotational- swivel the arytenoids on axis
What is the result of the action of lateral crico-arytenoid msucles?
adduct the vocal cords but due to rotation leave a space between the arytenoids at the back
What are the 2 parts of the arytenoid muscles?
oblique and transvere bands
What are teh attachments of the arytenoid muscles?
one arytenoid cartilage to another cricoid cartilage
What is the action of the arytneoid muscles?
move vocal cords together by pulling the arytenoids together
What are the abductor muscles of the larynx?
posterior crico-arytenoid muscles
What are the attachments of the posterior crico-arytenoid muscles?
posterior cricoid cartilage to muscular (laterla) processo f arytenoid cartilage
How do the posterior crico-arytenoid muscles work?
swivel arytenoids on axis- opposite of lateral crico-arytenoids
What muscles are contracted during forced respiration?
posterior crico-arytenoids
What muscles are contracted suring phonation?
arytenoids and lateral crico-arytenoids
what muscles are contracted during whispering?
lateral crico-arytenoids- only space left at the back is left
What nerve controls tension of soft palate?
V3
What nerve controls evelation of the soft palate?
vagus
What nerve supplies the intrinsic muscles of the larynx?
