Ear Flashcards
3 parts of the ear
- external
- middle
- inner
the external ear opening in which sound waves are funneled into is called the?
external auditory canal
The external auditory canal is lined with glands that secrete cerumen. what is cerumen
cerumen is a yellow/coloured waxy substance that protects and lubricate the ear
the two major types of cerumen?
- dry cerumen (flaky and grey-ish)
- wet cerumen (moist, honey brown to dark brown)
what seperates the external and middle ear?
tympanic membrane
the small superior portion of the tympanic membrane is called? while its larger thicker is called?
- pars flaccida
- pars tensa
the 3 tiny bones and auditory ossicles in the middle ear
- malleus
- stapes
- incus
what is the opening that connects the middle ear with the nasapharynx and allow for passage of ear
Eustachian tube
the inner ear is embedded in the bone and conatains labyrinth that holds the sensory organ for equilibrium and hearing. true or false?
TRUE
the inner ear is assesible for direct examination. true or false?
false. inner ear is not assesible for direct examination.
the functtin of earing involves the 3 levels at the auditory system called…?
- peripheral: the ear transmit sound and converts its vibration to electrical impulse which is then analyzed by the brain.
- brain stem: is a binaural interaction that helps a person locate the direction of the sound as well as identify the sound
- cerebral cortex: has the function of interpreting the sound and beginning appropriate response
types of hearing loss
- conductive hearing loss : is a partial loss as the person can still hear the increase in amplitude. involves a mechanical dysfunction the outer or middle ear.Conductive hearing loss is caused by fixation of the stapes
- sensorineural hearing loss : is a gradual nerve degeneration that occurs with aging = (presbycusis)
- mixed hearing loss: combination of both type on the same ear.
is the normal pathway of hearing, air or bone conduction?
the normal pathway is air conduction.
bone conduction is an alternative route in which the bone of the skull vibrate and these vibrations are transmitted directly to the inner ear and to cranial nerve VIII
the gradual nerve degeneration in young adult
otosclerosis
a middle ear infection that results in the obstruction of the Eustachian tube
otitis media
