E,E,E paper 2014 corrections Flashcards
What affects the values of lattice enthalpies in ionic compounds?
The size of the IONIC radius
The charge density
The electron shielding
Causes a greater attraction between ions
What is meant by half life?
The time for the concentration of reactants to fall by half
Why would something have a zero order of reaction?
Because it is in excess
When you increase the concentration of something in equilibrium, what happens to the concentration of that thing?
It still will be greater, even after equilibrium
How does affecting the pressure affect Kc?
It doesn’t affect Kc because Kc doesn’t change with pressure
What is meant by the term buffer solution?
A solution that minimises the change in pH
Only works for small additions of H+ or OH-
WHy is a buffer solution made when acid reacts with NaOH?
The NaOH reacts with the weak acid to form a salt (decreases moles of [HA])
But some of the weak acid remains
When drawing complex ions, what should and shouldn’t be included?
Charges inside the brackets shouldn’t be included but brackets and charge outside the brackets should be included
How do you work out waters of crystallisation?
Work out the moles of water and the moles of the other compound, and then divide water by compound
What is a ligand?
Donates a lone pair to a metal ion to from a coordinate bond
What happens when a transition metal complex ion reacts with concentrated HCl?
Ligand substitution of Cl- ions
