6.3 Flashcards
Mobile phase
Moves in a definite direction
Gas or liquid
Stationary phase
Fixed in place
Why does separation occur?
Because each chemical in the mixture has different attractions to each phase
Thin layer chromatography stationary phase?
Glass covered with aluminium oxide
Thin layer chromatography mobile phase?
Organic solvent
What does gas chromatography do?
Separates volatile components in a mixture
Gas chromatography stationary phase?
Solid/liquid coating of a coiled tube, usually a hydrocarbon with a high boiling point
Gas chromatography mobile phase?
Unreactive carrier gas like helium or nitrogen
How does a gas chromatogram graph work?
Is plotted absorbtion against time
Shows retention time
The area under the peak shows the concentration of the compound in the original mixture
Can compare retention times to known compounds
What can you use to test for pH?
Indicator or a pH probe
How do you test for a haloalkane?
AgNO3 and ethanol, precipitates
What is used in NMR as the reference chemical and why?
TMS (tetramethylsilane) Because in only has one environment for both H and C Non toxic Inert Volatile
What is used to dissolve the molecules in NMR?
CDCl3 solvent
Deuterium is used because it doesn’t show up
What is the rule used in H NMR?
N+1
When is D2O used in NMR?
To make the OH/NH groups disappear/not show up so that they can be found on the spectrum
