Dysregulation Flashcards
What is emotional regulation?
Involves initiating, inhibiting and modulating one’s mental state and behaviour in response to an external or internal stimulus
what are the 3 areas of the brain involved in regulation?
- reptilian brain - controls heart rate, breathing, body temp and balance. Includes the brainstem and the cerebellum
- The limbic system - emotions, memories and arousal (stimulation)
- Neocortex - part of the cerebral cortex. sensory perception, generation of motor commands, spatial reasoning, conscious thought and language
What is the process of dysregulation?
- An internal or external event provokes a subjective experience (emotion or feeling).
- Then a cognitive response (thought), followed by an emotion-related physiological response (for example increase in heart rate or hormonal secretion).
- Followed by a related behavior (avoidance, physical action or expression).
What are the 6 stages of arousal?
- Asleep
- Drowsy
- Hypo-alert
- Alert
- Hyper-alert
- Flooded
what are the zones of regulation?
- Red zone
- Yellow zone
- Green zone
- Blue zone
What are the 4 neural mechanisms for dealing with stress?
(1) Social engagement/co-regulation
(2) Fight-or-flight
(3) Freeze
(4) Dissociation
What is internal dysregulation?
- difficult to recognize
- Worry, anxiety, sadness, become easily upset, withdrawn, shut down
- feelings directed inwardly
- emotional suppression
- will need help from others to express their feelings and experiences
what is externalized dysregulation?
-typically observed
- easily upset and tend to externalize their behaviour
- need help to regain control
What is self regulation?
ability to achieve, sustain and change our arousal level to meet the changing demands of the task or situation.
what are the 5 domains of self regulation?
- Biological
-Prosocial - Emotional
- Social
- Cognitive
what are the 5 steps of an intervention to promote self regulation?
- Reframe the behaviour
- Recognize the stressors
- Reduce the stress
- Reflect: Enhance stress awareness
- Respond and return to calm
How can a CYC teach and promote self regulation skills?
-Psycho education
-Modelling
-Scaffolding
-Promote interoceptive awareness
-Evaluate, manage and monitoring stressors
-Empathy
-Reflection
-Positive reinforcement
-Enhance skills
-Assess and adjust the milieu
-Implementing Zones of Regulation activities
