Q

what are the 3 areas of the brain involved in regulation?

A
  1. reptilian brain - controls heart rate, breathing, body temp and balance. Includes the brainstem and the cerebellum
  2. The limbic system - emotions, memories and arousal (stimulation)
  3. Neocortex - part of the cerebral cortex. sensory perception, generation of motor commands, spatial reasoning, conscious thought and language

Q

What is the process of dysregulation?

A
  1. An internal or external event provokes a subjective experience (emotion or feeling).
  2. Then a cognitive response (thought), followed by an emotion-related physiological response (for example increase in heart rate or hormonal secretion).
  3. Followed by a related behavior (avoidance, physical action or expression).

Q

What is internal dysregulation?

A
  • difficult to recognize
  • Worry, anxiety, sadness, become easily upset, withdrawn, shut down
  • feelings directed inwardly
  • emotional suppression
  • will need help from others to express their feelings and experiences
