What is it?
pain during sex
How can dyspareunia lead to further pain?
Can occur in a vicious cycle in which anticipation of pain leads to tense muscles and lack of lubrication so further pain
When shouldn’t an examination be performed?What should be done instead?
→ If the problem is vaginismus do not insist on examination and consider counselling and psychosexual therapy
What Is superficial dyspareunia due to?
infection
vaginal dryness (oestrogen deficiency or lack of sexual stimulation)
sutures and scars (e.g. perineal repair)
narrow introitus
What is deep dyspareunia due to?
endometriosis
pelvic infection
wHat is dermatographism?
Benign skin condition with hive like reactions
What are the features of dermatographism?
Itchy vulval wheals - linear wheals surrounded by bright red flare in response to firm stroke
What can be used to relieve dyspareunia in dermatographism?
Adrenaline cream Cetirizine PO (antihistamine)
