fatty streaks
A
lipoproteins aggregate below the endothelium form fatty streaks
monocytes are attracted to fatty streaks below the endothelium where they are converted to macrophages
macrophages act to ‘mop up’ all the excess cholesterol. if there is too much cholesterol, foam cells form
these can then necrose, and release the cholesterol in the form of crystals
this is accelerated by smoking, which damages the endothelium, allowing the lipoproteins to aggregate much quicker below the endothelium
the same is true in diabetes, with high blood sugar damaging the endothelium
