Dynamic Gait Flashcards
advantages of Treadmill gait
-small space requirement
-availability of weight support for pt. safety
-increasing sophistication of instrumentation
disadvantages of treadmill gait
-higher cadence
-shorter stance times
-differences in joint ROM roughly 2.5 deg
stair climbing
relatively simalir to walking
LEs must balance and carry extremities and head
stance 64% swing 36%
Difference in stair climbing and ground walking ?
adequate muscle strenght and joint ROM for level ground walking does not ensure patient can ambulate stairs
ROM needed : 90-120 deg
this difference is seen in pathological patients
In general joints perform two things in stair climbing
generative-stair ascent
absoptive-stair descent
stance phase of stair climbing
weight acceptance
pull up
forward continuence
swing phase of stair climbing
foot clearance
foot placement
what else is required for stair climbing ?
increased muscle force to raise body against gravity
increased him and knee flexion in initial portion
Running gait
requires greater balance , muscle strength, and ROM than normal walking
decreased BOS and double limb stance
muscles and joint stuctures must also be able to absorb more energy to accept and control weight
GRFs at initial contact> 200 to 250% of BW
3 phases of running gait ?
stance 40%
swing 40%
float 20%
effects of aging on gait
age of when gait starts is variable typically 12-17 months
after age 62: there is a 16 and 12% decline in walking speed in men and women
50% of older people were able to walk before a hip are not able to walk or live independtly following fracture
toddlers have …
higher COM
wider BOS
decreased leg support time
shorter step length
slower velocity
higher cadence
