Dynamic Earth Flashcards
On the Earth
What is the structure of the earth?
On the Earth
Pangea split into?
- Lauriasia
- Gondwana
On the Earth
Who discovered continental drift?
Eduardo Suess in 1885
Earthquakes
What is the anatomy of an earthquake?
Earthquakes
How are earthquakes measured?
- The Richer scale measures the magnitude of a themor using an instrument called a seismometer
- It is a longarithmic scale which means that a size 6 on the Reicher scale is ten times more powerful than a size 5
Earthquakes
What are the types of seismic waves?
- Primary waves- First, quick, average 8km/s
- Secondary waves- 3.2-4km/s, travel through solids
- Surface waves- Slow, 2km/s, most destructive
Faults
What is a transform fault?
Faults
What is a divergent fault?
Faults
What is a seduction fault?
Faults
What is a convergent fault?
Ecology
What are the ecology levels of organisation?
Ecology
What are biotic factors and abiotic factors?
Biotic factors are living things within an ecosystem; such as plants, animals, and bacteria, while abiotic are non-living components; such as water, soil and atmosphere.
Ecology
How do abiotic factors change the biotic factors in the biome?
Give our example, name the factors and say how they effect one another
Biotic factors adapt to the abiotic factors in an ecosystem, and sometimes the other way around. An example of this is the temperate forest. Some abiotic factors are the temperature between 4 and 12 degrees, the rainfall being 140cm every year and sunlight having 6hrs a day of sunlight. These main abiotic factors affect the biotic factors in the ecosystem. For example, the plants get a good amount of sunlight making them grow extremely big (one of the temperate rainforests’ main attributes) making the biome home to thousands of different birds like the Superb Parrot, the Australian Masked Owl, and the Flame Robin because of the mass amount of trees it has a mass amount of room for nests and burrows. Another example is the cold climate, most animals such as the black bear and the long-nosed potoroo both have very thick coats.
Ecology
What is the consumer pyramid?
Ecology
What are Heterotophic consumers and what are the subsections?
Give name of subsection and small definition
- Heterotroph consumers- Organismsm which obtain organic molecules from other organisms
- Subspecies;
- Decomposers- Organisms that break down (digest) dead or decaying organisms
- Detritovers- Detritivores are animals that feed on detritus (dead organic material) via
internal digestion - Scavengers- Animals that consume dead organisms that have died from causes other than predation.
- Carnivores- only eat animals
- Herbivores- only eat plants
- Omnivores- eat both plants and animals
