Why do atoms react to other atoms?
Atoms react with other atoms because they lose, gain and share electrons to complete their outer shells. Atoms can bond together by ionic bonds or covalent bonds.
What are ionic bonds?
Ionic bonds happen between a metal and a non-metal. The metal becomes a positive ion and the non-metal becomes a negative ion and they attract by an electrostatic force. (Kinda like the positive and negative magnets)
What are covalent bonds?
Covalent bonds happen between non-metals. They share their electrons to complete their outer shell. For example two hydrogen atoms attaching to eachother.
What do acids produce?
Positive hydrogen ions in water
What do alkalis produce?
Negative hydroxide ions in water
What is an aqueous solution?
A solution that is dissolved in water
What are the different ways to find the PH of an alkaline or an acid?
- Universal Indicator
- Cabbage solution
- Litnus strips
What is an exothermic reaction?
An exothermic process releases heat, causing the temperature of the immediate surroundings to rise.
What is an endothermic reaction?
An endothermic process absorbs heat and cools the surroundings.
word equation for the neutralization of an acid plus a base
NaOH → H 2 O OH- + Na
what are two compounds that can neutralize an acid
Metal oxides and alkalis are two types of base
