Pharmacology of midazolam

A
  1. Short acting CNS depressant
  2. Induces amnesia, anaesthesia, hypnosis and sedation.
  3. Enhances the action of inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA.
  4. Depressant effects at all levels of the CNS.

A
  1. Reduced dosages may be required in elderly pts, pts with chronic renal failure, CCF, or shock
  2. Can cause severe respiratory depression in pts with COPD
  3. Myasthenia Gravis
  4. Multiple sclerosis

Midazolam Special Notes

A
  • Partial seizure activity in a patient who is unconscious or has ALOC should be treated as a generalised seizure.
  • If a patient has received midazolam or diazepam prior to arrival of paramedics, the amount administered is taken into account in the total dose administered.
