Pharmacology of midazolam
- Short acting CNS depressant
- Induces amnesia, anaesthesia, hypnosis and sedation.
- Enhances the action of inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA.
- Depressant effects at all levels of the CNS.
Metabolism of midazolam
By the liver, excreted by the kidneys
Indications of midazolam
- Seizures / convulsions

KSAR to midazolam
Precautions of midazolam
- Reduced dosages may be required in elderly pts, pts with chronic renal failure, CCF, or shock
- Can cause severe respiratory depression in pts with COPD
- Myasthenia Gravis
- Multiple sclerosis
Side effects of midazolam
- Hypotension
2. Respiratory depression particularly when associated with alcohol or narcotics

Midazolam Special Notes
- Partial seizure activity in a patient who is unconscious or has ALOC should be treated as a generalised seizure.
- If a patient has received midazolam or diazepam prior to arrival of paramedics, the amount administered is taken into account in the total dose administered.
