Drug class of glucose gel
Hyperglycaemic
Pharmacology of glucose gel
Glucose gel is a form of pure glucose that is rapidly absorbed into the GI mucousa
Used as glucose in the blood
In the liver it is converted to glycogen the storage form of glucose.
It is the principle source of energy especially for the brain.
Indications for glucose gel
Symptomatic hypoglycaemia in a pt able to ingest oral glucose
Contraindications of glucose gel
- KSAR
- Unconscious pts
- Pts with difficulty swallowing
- Pts < 2 yrs old
Precautions for glucose gel
Nil
Side effects of glucose gel
Diarrhoea
Nausea / vomiting
Presentation of glucose gel
15g in a tube
Onset, duration and half life of glucose gel
Onset 10 mins variable, duration variable, half life n/a
Schedule for glucose gel
Unscheduled
Doses of glucose gel, adult and paediatric
15g repeatable at 10mins, total max dose 30 g
Special notes for glucose gel
Pts are to swallow the entire contents of the tube where possible to maximise the rise in blood glucose levels.
