Methoxyflurane drug class
Analgesic ( at low doses )
Pharmacology of methoxyflurane
Inhalation agent that provides analgesia at low doses.
More susceptible to metabolism than other halogenated ethers
Greater propensity to diffuse into fatty tissue.
Metabolism of methoxyflurane
By the liver and excreted mainly by the lungs
Indications for methoxyflurane
Pain
Contraindications for methoxyflurane
- KSAR
- Hx of malignant hyperthermia
- Hx of signicant liver or renal disease
- t monitor pain level and self administration
Precautions for methoxyflurane
- ALOC
2. Intoxicated or drug affected patients
Side effects of methoxyflurane
- Cough
- ALOC
- Hepatic or renal failure following repeated high doses

3ml glass bottle

5-10mins

S4 restricted drug
Onset of methoxyflurane
1-3mins
Doses of methoxyflurane for adults
3ml repeatable after 20 mins, max dose 6ml
Dose for Paediatrics
3 ml non repeatable
Special notes for methoxyflurane
- Deep sedation in pts < 5 yrs old
- At no time should unconsciousness be deliberately induced by administration
- At no time should a pt self administering be left unattended.
- The lowest dose should be used to achieve analgesia
- If the pt prefers simultaneous administration through nose and mouth a face mask can be connected prior to administration
- Total weekly dose should not exceed 15 mls
- Only 1 in the back of the vehicle, 2 per shift per officer
