Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Essentials
* Obsessions (thoughts) > Compulsions (behaviors)
* ‘O’ Leads to stress/anx which > ‘C’ ignoring/suppressing
* Both can be time consuming, cause sig distress
* Specifiers of - w/ good/fair insight, poor insight, absent insight/delusional beliefs.
Onset | Risks
* Males earlier age of onset, 25% before 10yrs
* M more affected in childhood | F more commonly/affected in adulthood
* SI risk is HIGH in indiv. w/ OCD
Treatments
* Exposure w/ response prevention, cognitive therapy | often combined
Body Dysmorphic Disorder*
- preoccupation w/ PERCEIVED defects in appearance
- repetitive bx (mirror checking, grooming) | mental (comparing)
Onset | Risk | Comorbidity
* usually adolescence
* F > M
* SI attempts are high
* Comorbidiy of MDD most common
Treatment(s)
* CBT
* Medications (SSRIs)
Hoarding | diff (due to distress) getting rid of possessions regardless of actual value
Trichotillomania | pulling of hair, results in noticeable hair loss, repeated attempt to stop
Excoriation (skin-picking) | picking at skin, results in lesions, repeated attempt to stop
Other Specified OC & Related |
* Ex. obsessional jealousy and ‘koro’ (instense anx that penis or vulva/nipples will recede into body, possibly lead to death)
