Essential Features
*AT LEAST 1 Manic episode
* 1 week, present nearly every day
*preceded/followed by hypo or mood but not necessary

Prevalence
* 1.5% [gen population]
* High-$ countries > Low-$
* M = F
* Risk of SI 20-30x general

Heritability | highest of all
* IDENTICAL Twins - 40-50%
* FRATERNAL Twins/Sibs - 25%
* Parents [??]

Onset for Bipolar I
* ~22yrs
* Recurrent, 90% having 1 episode will have more in the future
* Stressors play more a role among the 1st/2nd episodes than subsequent

Medication Management | lifelong
* Lithium (Li)
* Tegretol
* Depakene (valproic acid)
* Psychoeducation (providing info about BD w/ goal of improving adherence to medication)

Cyclothymic Disorder

A
  • Numerous periods of hypomanic Sx and depressive Sx
  • Over course of 2 yrs (adults) | 1 year (child/adol)
  • Throughout 2yrs, only w/o Sx for less than 2m at a time | both types of Sx present for at least 1/2 the time.

No major depressive, manic or hypomanic episodes.
