Drug
any chemical used for therapeutic purposes such as treating an illness, reliving a symptom, or conducting diagnostic testing
Ideal drug
concept that a drug would have all good effects and qualities and no negative effects or qualities
Safe drug
can be taken in adequate doses over long periods of time w/ no harmful effects
Drug interaction
combined effect of medications taken together
Drug-drug
no effect on each other; one drug will increase the effect on the another or both drugs will increase effect on each other; one drug will decrease effect on the other or both drugs will decrease effect on each other
Nutrient-Drug
still being understood, toxic effects, food or no food
Disease-drug
can interfere w/ another drug
Drug nomenclature
refers to all of the names by which a drug can be identified (chemical name: chemical composition of drugs long, generic name: proper way to express name a brand name: given by manufactory, OTC name)
Generic Drug
is made of same stuff as brand-name, but there not protected by a trademark (same as brand-name in safety, strength, quality, dosage, function, ingredients, regulated by FBA)
Developing a new drug
- develop drug by scientist (known by chemical name)
- FDA approves drug
- manufactory markets drug w/ brand-name
- pharmaceutical company holds brand-name for 20 years after 11 to 12 years other companies can make generic version
FDA (FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION)
government agency that decides what drug may be sold and under what legal restrictions
-enforces law pertaining to the manufacture, packing, and dispensing of prescription drug and cosmetics
Over the Counter (OTC)
FDA has placed no restrictions on drug
Legend Durg
can be distrusted only by prescription because it may cause harmful side effects
Controlled Substance
dangerous and subject to abuse
DEA (DRUG ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATION)
regulates sale of dangerous drugs
