Drug Classifications and Effects Flashcards
Drug Classification
grouping or organizing of drugs
Analgesics
drugs that relieve pain
Analgesics…OTC
- acetylsallcylic acid (aspirin)–Bayer, Buffering
- Acetaminphen–Tylenol
- Ibuprofen–Advil, Motrin
- Naproxen–Aleve

Analgesics…Narcotics
=work to relieve severe pain (side effects=drowsiness, confusion, and constipation)
- morphine
- codeine
- oxycodone
- oxycodone w/ acetaminophen
Anesthetics
=reduce or eliminate sensation
Anesthetics…topical
used on the surface of the skin or other tissue
Anesthetics…local
for anesthetizing a small part of the body
- ydrocortisone acetate (corabase)
- lidocaine (xylocaine)
- procaine (novocain)
Anesthetics…regional
- works in a similar way to local but affects larger part of body
- spinal epidurals
- peripheral nerve blocks
Anesthetics…genernal
=eliminates sensation in the whole body and renders the patient completely unconscious
- halothane (fluothane)
- nitrous oxide
- tholpental (pentothal)
Mode of Induction
differed depending on the type of anesthesia
Lipuid Anesthetic
administered w/ intravenous pump
Regional
administered by nerve block, injected along a nerve path to stop nerve impulses
Local anesthesia
administered by infiltration injection into tissue area
General asthenia
administered through the lungs or veins
Antibiotics
stop growth of bacteria
a. penicillins
b. cephalosporins
c. sulfonamides
d. quinones
Drug Action
all drugs cause changes in cells which causes an effect in body (systematic-throughout body or local-limited)
-receptor=”target cells”
