Drugs - RX Flashcards
Phenelzine
MAO inhibitor used to treat depression
phentolamine
nonselective alpha-antagonist with short duration of action
phenylephrine
alpha agonist
atropine
muscarinic antagonist used to treat bradycardia
isosorbide dinitrate
vasodilator used to treat angina by inducing release of NO
mirtazaine
alpha2 blocker; used to treat depression
methimazole
blocks oxidation of iodine in thyroid inhibiting synthesis of thyroid hormone
propylthiouracil
blocks oxidation of iodine in thyroid inhibiting synthesis of thyroid hormone; also works peripherally to inhibit converstion of T4 to T3
mebendazole
antihelminthic medication; interferes with microtubule synthesis
glyburide
sulfonylurea; closes K+ channel in beta cell membrane resulting in insulin release; can cause hypoglycemia as side effect
miglitol
intestinal brush border alpha-glucosidase inhibitor; delays hydrolysis of sugars and absorption of glucose to reduce hyperglycemia postprandially; side effect is osmotic diarrhea as sugar stays in GI tract
rosiglitazone
enhances target cell response to insulin by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors; adverse effects are weight gain, edema, hepatotoxicity
