Drugs Flashcards
Bromocriptine
Stimulate dopamine receptors; inhibit prolactin secretion; reduce size of prolactinomas; decrease growth hormone concentration in acromegaly
Indications: Parkinsons, acromegaly, hyperprolactinaemia
Safe in pregnancy
Inhibits lactation
Pyridostigmine
Reduce breakdown of neuronally released acetylcholine by inhibiting cholinesterase; reduce neuromuscular transmission in skeletal and smooth muscles
Indications: myasthenia gravis
Sildenafil
Inhibition of phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) leads to relaxation of smooth muscle in the pulmonary vascular bed producing vasodilation and reduction of pulmonary vascular resistance
Indication: Pulmonary arterial hypertension
Netupitant
Neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor antagonist
For chemo related nausea and vomiting
Nizatidine
H2 receptor blocker
Works on parietal cells to decrease acid secretion
GORD
Pegvisomant
Growth hormone receptor antagonist
Blocks peripheral production of insulin like growth factor
Galantamine
Cholinesterase inhibitor
Mild-moderate Alzheimer’s
Teriparatide
Recombinant form of the bioactive portion of PTH. In intermittent use it activates osteoblasts more than osteoclasts leading to an overall increase in bone formation.
Adexanet Alpha
Recombinant modified human factor Xa decoy protein for the reversal of apixaban and rivaroxaban in patients with uncontrollable bleeding
