drugnutrientinteractions Flashcards
what are the four ways effects of drug nutrient interactions on pharmocokinetics
absorption distribution metabolism and excretion
what is alenddronate or fosamax
Used to prevent bone resorption, must be taken during the fasting state because it reduce absoption of up to 60% with foods or liquids
what is ondansetron or zofran
antemitc agent, increases drug absorption with the presence of food.
what is ciprofloxacin or cipro
broad spectrum antimicrobial agent, can bind divalent cation such as calcium iron and zinc preventing absorption of the drug, avoid dairy liquids or liquid supplements.
what is omeprazole or prilosec
proton pump inhibitor used to suppress gastric acid secretion, can reduce the extraction of protein bound nutrients such as vitamin B12
what is colestipol or colestid
antilipidemic agent used to treat hypercholesterolemia, sticks to the bile acids and salts and leads to excretion, but also will bind to fat soluble vitamins will be more readily excreted as well, ADEK
what is phenytoin or dilantin
anticovulsant used to treat seizures, about 95% protein bound in the blood little makes it to the target, so if you have hypoproteinimia will lead to more drug in the tissue and could lead to adverse effects.
what is ethinyl estradiol or ortho tri-cyclin
oral contraceptive substance, st johns wort has been shown to increase expression of CYP 3A4 and that can lead to the degradation of the contraceptive and making it less effective.
what is simvastatin or zocor
used to treat hypercholesterolemia, and grapefruit juice inhibits CYP3A4 in the gut and liver and can cause a higher effect of the Zocor or simvastatin
what is lithium
used to treat manic depressive illness, lithium and sodium can compete for binding site throughout the body so if you change the amount of sodium in the body it will change the excretion of lithium and could lead to less or more of the drug in the body.
what is phenelzine or nardil
monoamine oxidase inhibitor used for depression and anxiety. Tyramine is a monoamine and is prevented from breaking down as well, so increased intake of cheese dried meats soy beer and chocolate will cause a hypertensive crisis with to many monoamines
what is warfarin or coumadin
anticoagulant used to the treatment of a vareity of cardiovascular conditoin deep vain thrombosis, it will inhibit the actions of vitamin K so you need to increase the vitamin k in your diet
what are the effects of asparin or NSAIDS on the GI
increased acid secretion decreased mucus secretion and impaired mucosal blood flow. This can lead to ulcers causing pain leading to a decrease in apatite
what are the effects of anticholoinergic agnets on the GI
lead to a decrease in the parastalsis causing a sensation of being full for longer.
what are the effects of aantibiotics on the GI
kills gut flora leads to opportunistic infections
