drug terminology Flashcards
PNS drugs
release acetylcholine and affect the PNS; blocks parasympathetic nerves so sympathetic dominates
SNS drugs
fight or flight; adrenergic drugs stimulate that response to help the body adapt to stressful situations
alpha-1 receptor
constriction of peripheral blood vessels
alpha-2 receptor
inhibits norepinephrine release (vasodilation, sedation, analgesia, bradycardia)
beta-1
increased cardiac contractibility and increased heart rate
beta-2
inhibitory; mainly bronchodilation
positive inotropic drugs
adrenergic drugs that increase cardiac contractions
positive chronotropic drugs
adrenergic drugs that increase heart rate
vasopressors
adrenergic drugs that cause vasoconstriction
tranquilizers
reduce anxiety and induce sense of tranquility
sedatives
induce drowsiness and hypnosis; reduce mental activity
analgesics
reduce pain
opiate
derived naturally
opioid
synthetically made
agonist
binds and stimulates tissue receptors
