Drug Interactions Flashcards
What is a pharmacologic drug interaction?
physical/chemical interaction between drugs, drug solutions, environment, etc
examples of pharmacologic drug interactions?
doxycycline becomes less active with improper storage (detrimental).
lactated ringers chelates enrofloxacin antibiotic and makes it inactive (detrimental).
what is a pharmacodynamic drug interaction?
additive, antagonist, synergistic effect of combining two drugs and the effect on patient. A helpful example is synergistic activity of two antibiotics.
what is a pharmacokinetic drug interaction?
interactions which impact the absorption, distribution, metabolism, or excretion of the drug.
example of pharmacokinetic interaction?
herbal supplements in combination with prescription drugs can be detrimental. (not regulated by FDA, can have toxic side effects, can affect metabolism of other drugs)
