Droperidol Flashcards
Droperidol: Introduction
Droperidol is neuroleptic, antipsychotic agent that acts on alpha and dopamine receptors, resulting in sedation.
Use of a sedative agent should never be considered routine. Have a high threshold to offer or administer.
Droperidol: Indication
1) DAB (RASS1-3) if considered appropriate, where risk to safety is evident and de-escalation has not been effective
2) Dementia and frail patients where olanzapine cannot be administered or is ineffective
Droperidol: Contraindications
1) Known Allergy
2) Parkinson’s Disease
3) Where Ketamine has been administered to sedate this patient
4) Age <6 years
5) Post-ictal DAB
Droperidol: Considerations
Extrapyramidal effects / Dyskinesia
Increased falls risk
Hypotension
Apply monitoring as soon as practicable
Droperidol: Precautions
Address organic causes
Post ROSC agitation - consult CSP/ASMA
Dementia - apply caution, use lower dose
