Drive - Cystic fibrosis (overview) Flashcards
1
Q
Why does cystic fibrosis effect digestion/absorption?
A
As the CFTR channel is abnormal so Cl- will build up in the gland cells
2
Q
Why does built up Cl- levels effect digestion/absorption?
A
As less HCO3- enters (no electrochemical gradient). pH remains acidic.
3
Q
Why does a maintained low pH in the small intestine cause digestion/absorption issues?
A
As pancreatic enzymes are not activated at low pH. Thus less breakdown of food matter so less absorbtion
