Drive - bile Flashcards
Where is bile produced?
In the liver
Where is bile stored?
Gall bladder
How much bile can the gall bladder hold?
about 50ml
What is the path of the bile from production in the liver to excretion into the duodenum?
left and right hepatic ducts -> common hepatic ducts -> (joined by the cystic duct) -> common bile ducts -> ampulla of Vater
What is the release of bile by the gall bladder into the cystic duct triggered by?
CCK (Cholecystokinin)
Where is CCK (Cholecystokinin) produced?
Duodenum
What part of the duodenum does the bile enter in?
The junction between D2 and D3.
What is the function of bile?
To emulsify bile
What is the purpose of the actin filaments surrounding the bile canaliculi?
To pump bile towards the bile ducts
What 6 major components is bile composed of?
Bile salts Lecithin HCO3- Cholesterol Bile pigments Trace metals
What cells secrete the different the components of bile
Epithelial cells = HCO3-
Hepatocytes = rest (bile salts, cholesterol, lecithin and bile pigments)
What triggers the release of HCO3- from the bile ducts into the duodenum and why?
Secretin - due to acid in the duodenum.
What is the enterohepatic circulation?
The absorbtion and return of bile salts (via the portal vein) to the liver where they are then secreted in the bile. - continuous process
How are bile salts re-absorbed in the intestinal tracts?
Through specific Na+ coupled transporters in the jejunum and terminal ileum
What % of bile salts are lost in faeces?
5%
