What is graphite?
Clay lead
What are graphite pencils?
This is a piece of graphite within a wooden support
What are clutch pencils?
It is where the lead is held in a plastic cylinder and the lead is pushed out by means of a button
How are graphite pencils darker/lighter?
Softer leads make dark marks on a piece of paper because they leave more lead behind. Harder leads make light marks on a piece of paper because they leave less lead behind.
What are soft pencils?
B pencils
What are hard pencils?
H-F pencils
What are coloured pencils?
They are similar to graphite pencils, but the clay lead is coloured
What are water coloured pencils?
They are pencils that you draw with and then paint over with water. This creates the look of water paints.
What is charcoal?
It is slightly burnt wood that can be drawn with.
Why is charcoal good to draw with?
It is easy to smudge, so it can blend easily and create a variety of tints and shades
Why is charcoal not good to draw with?
It can smudge after you have completed your drawing, so a fixative needs to be used.
What is chalk used for?
It can be dyed to create different colours. It can also be used to highlight things on drawings
What are wax crayons?
This is when a coloured pigment is firmly compressed into a stick and bound with a small quantity of wax.
