- the first paragraph of your essay
- Includes three parts: hook, background information, thesis

- 4 main Hooks: tell a story/anecdote, ask a question, give a startling statistic, use a quote from someone important

- a few sentences of “filler”
- why is your topic important?
- what do readers need to know before they can understand the rest of your essay
