Left displaced abomasum
Abomasum gets full of gas like a balloon, cow doesn’t eat, rumen shrinks, and abomasum slips under rumen onto left side
Right displaced abomasum
Abomasum gets distended with gas and no longer fits under rumen
EMERGENCY because most will have a torsion within a few hours
C section
Third common surgery in cow (after LDA and RDA)
Regardless of what horn pregnancy is in, best is to incise on left side
Where is the incision made for cow surgeries
Paralumbar fossa
Boundaries:
Dorsal- transverse process and iliocostalis muscle
Cranial- last rib
Caudal- tuber coxae
Ventral- tendon and external and internal abdominal oblique
What nerves should you block
T13, L1, L2
Paravertebral block
Palpate transverse processes of vertebrae and inject lidocaine above and below
Disadvantage- block everything you can because you cant know for sure which nerve is what
Line block
Inject perpendicular to skin, all the way to needle hub
Make a line by your incision
Disadvantage- may inhibit wound healing
What layers do you cut through
Skin Fascia External abdominal oblique Internal abdominal oblique Transversus abdominus Peritoneum
Inverted L block
Third way to nerve block
Epidural
Just have to get somewhere between C1 and C5
