Dr Beaver's tute - femoral neck fractures Flashcards
(6 cards)
what is important about femoral neck fractures
whether the femoral head blood supply is affected and how
any fracture that occurs inside the capsule (intra-capsular) has the potential to interrupt blood supply and cause avascular necrosis especially displaced ones.
intracapsular
inside the soft tissue ligaments that contain the joint
if a fracture happens within this space can cause avascular necrosis
what treatment would a intracapsular fracture get in an elrerly
either half or full hip replacement depending on their activity level
usually insufficiency fracture
what if a young person has a intracapsular fracture
the ortho will do anything to avoid a hip replacement
because a hip replacement will eventually fail
intratrochanteric fracture
won’t be at risk of vascular necrosis
this can be treated using internal fixation - won’t need to replace the hip joint
what else?
dr beaver says that will be enough knowledge on femoral neck to get you through your exam.
