Downing Part I Flashcards
Plasma clots, Serum. . .
does not!
Rouloux or stacked red blood cells appear in. . .
. . .multiple myeloma!
What percentage of the differential count is neutrophils?
50-70%
What cell helps combat parasites/worms?
Eosinophils
- Bilobed
- Red tint
What are eosinophils involved in?
Migrate to sites of allergic reactions (hay fever & asthma), inflammatory reactions, or parasitic worm invasions
What do azurophilic granules act similar to?
Lysosomes!
What are the functions of basophils (have very large, dark granules and two lobes)?
- Involved in initiating allergic and inflammatory responses (similar to mast cells)
- Fc receptors for the Fc fragment of IgE
- Release histamine
- Produce leukotrienes
- Similar effects to that of histamine, but actions are slower and more persistent
What percentage of circulating lymphocytes are B and T?
B - 15%
T - 80-90%
What does the nucleus in monocytes look like?
Indented, oval, kidney or horseshoe shaped (one lobe only!)
What is important about monocytes?
- Differentiate into macrophages in the connective tissues and other places
- 2nd line of defense against invading organisms
What percentage of the differential are lymphocytes?
20-40%
What do promyelocytes have that other developing cells don’t?
Very large, uncondensed nucleus with nucleoli AND granules present!
