DONE The Lymphatic System Flashcards
What are the 4 components of the lymphatic system?
Lymph
Lymphatic organs
Lymphatic vessels
Lymph nodes
Lymph
pH 7.4
Lymph in GI tract = chyle
3-4 L per day
Lymphatic organs
Vermiform appendix, tonsils, Payer’s patches, spleen, thymus
Lymphatic vessels
Capillaries > ducts > trunks > veins
Lymph nodes
Neck = cervical, groin = inguinal, armpit = axillae
Afferent = enter via convex surface
Efferent (Exit) = leave via concave hilium
Follicular dendritic cells, macrophages + B/T cells
Functions of lymphatic system
Fluid balance
Transport fats + fat-sol. vits.
Immune response
Store + destroy aged erythrocytes
Flow of lymph
Upper right quadrant drains into right subclavian vein
Lymphatic capillary vs. Vein
Low pressure
Valves
Less smooth muscle
Lymphangion compression by local veins/arteries propels lymph
Thymus
In superior mediastinum (near trachea)
Mainly active in children
Function = mature bone marrow derived stem cells to T cells
Spleen
Largest lymphatic organ
Inferior to diaphragm, posterior to stomach
Function = immune (antigen presentation by APCs, antibody + T/B cell proliferation), haemopoeitic (store + remove damaged erythrocytes)
Tonsils
Near oropharynx + nasopharynx
Form part of Waldeyer’s ring
Function = prevent pathogen entry via oral/nasal routes
Vermiform appendix
Attached to ascending colon
Function = prevent pathogen entry via GI routes
Payer’s patches
Side of ileum
Function = prevent pathogen ingress through digestion
Sentinel lymph nodes
1st set of lymph nodes that swell in cancer
