DONE Bone Flashcards
What bones do endochondral ossification form?
Long bones from cartilage template
What bone type does intramembranous ossification form?
Flat bones with mesenchymal tissue (not hyaline cartilage replacement)
What are the 5 stages of fracture repair?
Fracture, haematoma formation, fibrocartilaginous callus formation, bony callus formation, bone remodelling
What do osteoclasts do?
Bone breakdown (resorption)
What do osteoblasts do?
Bone forming cells, deposit bony matrix
What are osteocytes?
Mature osteoblasts, completely surrounded by bony matrix
Other name for osteogenesis imperfecta
Brittle bone disease (mutation in COL1A gene, incorrect production of collagen 1 fibres)
What is rickets?
Vit. D deficiency causes poor calcium mobilisation, ineffective mineralisation of osteoid
Rickets symptoms
Weakened bone, soft bone, short stature, bow-legged appearance
Primary type 1 osteoporosis
Postmenopausal, increased osteoclasts (degrade trabecular bone = holes) due to oestrogen loss
Primary type 2 osteoporosis
Older people, loss of oestrogen and androgen = loss of osteoblast function
Secondary osteoporosis
Drug therapy/space travel/malnutrition
Modifiable osteoporosis risk factors
700mg/day of calcium
More exercise (less bone lost due to immobilisation)
Not smoking in women
Achondroplasia
Short limb dwarfism (mutation in FGF3 gene), affects collagen formation = endochondral ossification affects long bones
What are the 5 types of bone?
Long Short Flat Irregular Sesmasoid
