Anal stage (1 year to 3 years/toddler)
Ex. Between 2-4 years of age there is nerve integration of the spinal cord as it fully forms and creates control over bowels and bladder excretion. Kids would rather urinate on themselves than stop playing which is the cause of accidents which delays potty training until 4-5 years old. Use cloth diapers because the baby will feel the wetness and want to potty train faster than with disposable diapers.
Child learns sexual identity through awareness of genital area. The child initially identifies with the parent of the opposite sex but by the end of this stage identifies with the same-sex parent. They develop an understanding of the differences between sexes. What is the stage and age range?
Phallic Stage (3 years to 5 years/pre-schooler)
Study Tip: Sexual energy becomes centered in the genitalia as the child works out relationships with the parent of the same and of the opposite sex. Masturbation is typical at this age but should be inhibited by using redirection and refocusing.

Latent stage (6 years to 12 years/school age)
Ex. Sexual urges occur. The child will determine what is acceptable based on what society deems acceptable and unacceptable.
Develops sexual maturity and learns to establish satisfactory relationships with the opposite sex. The individual focuses on genital function and intimate relationships. What is the stage and age range?
Genital Stage (13-17 years)
Study Tip: Mature sexuality is achieved as physical growth is completed and relationships with others occur.
Nursing Implication: Be alert for children who are more comfortable with either a male or female nurse, and attempt to accommodate them. Encourage parental involvement in care. Plan for playtime and offer a variety of material to choose from. At what developmental stage would you implement this intervention?
Phallic Stage (3 years to 5 years/pre-schooler)
Ex. Understands sexual roles such as a male child vs a female child.
Child explores the world but using his mouth especially the tongue. The child obtains pleasure and comfort through the mouth

Latent stage (6 years to 12 years/school age)
Study Tip: Sexual energy is at rest in the passage between earlier stages and adolescence.

Ex. Everything goes in the mouth so be careful not to leave things in the bed such as caps to flushes. CHOKING HAZARD.
